EASTER AT ST. PAUL’S UNITED CHURCH, 2018
One of the many things I like about living in the northern hemisphere is the changing seasons. If I had to pick a favourite, I think it would be spring, mainly because it is a time of awakening, of new growth, and of rebirth.
That change of seasons is also found in churches. Most churches follow a liturgical calendar and right now, we are celebrating Lent, the time leading up to Christ’s crucifixion on Good Friday and then His resurrection on Easter Sunday.
At St. Paul’s United Church in Spryfiled, there are a number of special services associated with Easter. I’m always pleased to see collaboration of organizations happening and we see quite a bit of that occurring during the whole Easter season. We began on Ash Wednesday, February 14, with our joint service with the Sambro/Parkhill United Churches pastoral charge. That service was held in the intimate little church in Jollimore, Parkhill United Church and was a joint service with St. Paul’s United. Rev. Helene Burns, and Rev. Anne Hoganson. Rev. Burns is the minister of the Sambro/Jollimore pastoral charge and Rev. Hoganson is at St. Paul’s United in Spryfield.
As we worship through this season, we will have several services focusing on Easter. Sunday, March 25 is Palm Sunday when we learn about Christ’s triumphal procession into Jerusalem. That is followed by Maundy Thursday, the day of Christ’s last supper with his disciples. The word Maundy comes from a Latin word meaning commandment and it was at the Last Supper that Jesus issued the commandment to love one another. Maundy Thursday is sometimes referred to as Holy Thursday and is another joint service of St. James United, in Sambro, Parkhill United in Jollimore and St. Paul’s United will be at St. Paul’s United in Spryfield on Thursday, March 29 at 7:00pm.
The next collaborative service is a Good Friday service on Friday morning at Emmanuel Church in Spryfield. This is a joint ecumenical service, with most Spryfield churches taking part, and is at 10:30 in the morning. As well as participating in the Ecumenical Service, at St. Paul’s United will be having our own Good Friday Service at 7:00pm.
As we have been doing for a number of years, St. Paul’s will be meeting for a Sunrise Service at the Dingle on Easter morning. That will be at 6:45 am in the parking lot by the Dingle playground, as we look east toward harbour and the rising sun. This is a very moving service and all are welcome to attend. For those who aren’t early risers, there is communion Easter Service will be held at the church, 164 Old Sambro Rd., at 11:00am.
Our regular events at St. Paul’s continue through Lent. Every Tuesday, we host Soup’s On where all comers are served a hearty lunch of soup, sandwiches, tea, coffee and dessert. There is no charge for this.
The drumming group that meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month wanted me to stress that thesis not performance drumming but a time of spiritual contemplation. If you don’t have a drum, do not let that deter you. This month’s session is on Tuesday, March 27.
There is lots of great music at St. Paul’s. The choir practices on Monday evenings, at 7:00pm, Bell Choir at 6:45 on Wednesday evenings and the Worship Band meets at 7:00pm on Thursdays. You do not have to belong to the church to take part in these.
On Sunday mornings, there is a group that meets for prayer at 10:00-10:30 am, before church. At 10:30, coffee and tea are on as people begin to gather for worship. Feel free to come for the coffee and stay for worship.
